Meet the Interior Designer: Charlotte Lucas

Already featured by Forbes.com and Southern Living, the recent cottage renovation at Barnsley Resort came to life under the direction of Charlotte Lucas Design. Founded by Charlotte Harris Lucas in 2012, this full-service design firm out of Charlotte, North Carolina is known for a bold use of color and whimsy detail in residential and commercial projects.

At Barnsley, Lucas focused on maintaining the welcoming cottage character while incorporating a fresh appeal to introduce an elevated atmosphere of reimagined Southern hospitality. The refreshed aesthetic focuses on blending bold patterns with soft details, all inspired by a heritage color palette and the flora and fauna of the Southern region. Throughout, a mixture of warm plaids and stripes are complemented by soft neutrals and textured walls. Accent wall coverings and floor-to-ceiling draperies of subdued florals and sporting dog scenes inspired by the Beretta Shooting Grounds provide pops of color, bringing the natural landscape and resort themes indoors.

What was the biggest challenge of the cottage renovation project at Barnsley Resort? 
Our biggest challenge was finding a design with the right balance of durability, functionality, and elevated aesthetic to meet the dynamic needs of resort guests!

What is your favorite detail in the cottage renovation project?
One of my favorite features in the cottages is the wood-burning fireplace! This wasn’t a new feature but a celebrated feature of the original cottages that we wanted to continue to design around! The new mini bar refresh was also a favorite feature with great details-the pop of wallpaper and upgraded plumbing and hardware are a gorgeous combination!

What is your favorite activity at Barnsley?
My favorite activities are the trail rides on horseback and ending the day with old friends (and new ones!) around the outdoor firepits!

How do you hope guests will enjoy the new cottage aesthetic?
I just hope the guests feel at home and comfortable in the new cottages! They were designed to feel as though they are an extension of your home…comfortable and inviting!
